Cruising Is Officially Having Its Moment — And the Numbers Prove It

If you ever needed proof that cruising has fully cemented its place as one of America’s favorite vacation choices, the numbers are in — and they’re nothing short of remarkable. According to a forecast from AAA and Tourism Economics, 21.7 million Americans are projected to take an ocean cruise in 2026. That would mark the fourth consecutive year of record U.S. cruise passenger volume, and it follows a 2025 that already outperformed expectations with 20.7 million passengers sailing the seas.

To put those numbers in perspective, the cruise industry carried 19.1 million American cruisers in 2024. That’s an 8.4% jump in just one year, followed by a projected 4.5% increase heading into 2026. What’s driving all of this? A combination of factors: stunning new mega-ships hitting the water, cruise lines expanding into exciting new destinations and itinerary styles, more private destination openings, and genuinely competitive pricing that makes cruising look like an incredible value compared to land-based vacations requiring flights and hotel bookings across multiple stops.

The Caribbean continues to reign supreme as the top cruise destination for Americans, capturing a whopping 72% of all U.S. cruise passengers. Alaska comes in second at 7%, with the Mediterranean at 5%. Miami remains the world’s busiest cruise homeport, and Florida overall dominates the embarkation market with Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale also ranking among the top global ports.

Perhaps the most telling stat of all? A full 90% of U.S. cruise passengers rate their experience as good or very good, and 91% have taken multiple cruises. Once someone sails, they almost always come back. That kind of loyalty and satisfaction is rare in any industry, and it speaks volumes about why cruise lines are investing billions in new ships, private destinations, and onboard experiences right now.

If you’ve been thinking about booking your first cruise — or your tenth — there has never been a better time to be a cruiser. The golden age of cruising isn’t coming. It’s already here.
