Celebrity Cruises Gratuity Increase Hits Every Stateroom Type

The Celebrity Cruises gratuity increase caught plenty of travelers off guard this week. Starting July 29, 2026, daily gratuities jumped by $1.50 per guest, across every single stateroom category. No cabin type was spared from the hike.

Inside, oceanview, and veranda staterooms now carry a daily gratuity of $19.50 per guest, up from $18. That might sound small per day, but it adds up fast across a full week-long sailing.

Higher-tier cabins see bigger jumps too

Concierge and AquaClass staterooms climbed to $20.50 per guest, per day, up from the previous $19 rate. The Retreat, Celebrity’s top-tier suite category, now runs $24.50 daily, rising from $23. Every category moved in the same direction, just by slightly different amounts.

For a family of four sailing a 7-night cruise in a veranda cabin, that increase adds up to $42 more in gratuities alone. It’s not an enormous sum, but it’s a real one. Budgeting cruisers will want to factor this into their next Celebrity booking.

Why the timing sparked frustration

Here’s where things got messy for Celebrity. The cruise line began notifying guests about the increase on July 29, the exact same day the new rates took effect. That left zero window for guests to prepay gratuities at the old, lower rate.

Cruisers who typically prepay gratuities months in advance to lock in pricing had no chance to do so this time. Online cruise communities lit up with frustration almost immediately. Same-day notification, with no advance warning, feels different from a standard price adjustment.

How this compares across the industry

Gratuity increases aren’t unique to Celebrity, and other major lines have made similar moves this year. What stands out here is less the increase itself and more the abrupt rollout. Most cruise lines give guests weeks, not zero days, to adjust their prepayment plans.

Celebrity hasn’t publicly addressed the criticism over timing specifically. The rate increase itself remains in effect regardless of guest reaction. For now, guests booking new sailings should expect the updated $19.50 to $24.50 range depending on cabin type.

What this means for your next Celebrity cruise

If you have an upcoming Celebrity sailing, check your account for updated gratuity charges immediately. Prepaying, even at the new higher rate, can still simplify your onboard budget. It just won’t save you the money it might have a week earlier.

Gratuity increases across the cruise industry show no signs of slowing down in 2026. Building a little extra cushion into your cruise budget remains the smartest move going forward.
