Move over, Alaska. The Mediterranean is having a moment. A brand-new survey from Cruiseline.com and Shipmate just dropped some fascinating numbers. More than 5,500 travelers weighed in on where they’re headed next.

The biggest headline? Interest in Mediterranean cruises has officially overtaken Alaska for 2026. Transatlantic sailings are climbing too, surprising even industry watchers. It seems Americans are craving European adventures again.

Cruisers are booking earlier than ever

Nearly 93% of survey respondents already have a voyage booked for 2026 or beyond. That’s a staggering commitment level for any travel category. Over 70% said they’re planning to book even more trips soon.

Looking further out, 78% have a cruise locked in for 2026. More than 60% already have something booked for 2027. A notable 13.6% are planning as far ahead as 2028.

Shorter cruises are trending hard

Here’s a fun twist: not everyone wants a two-week voyage anymore. Interest in short getaways, from two to six nights, is climbing fast. New ships like Utopia of the Seas are fueling that trend, with quick Bahamas escapes perfect for long weekends.

It makes sense for busy American families. A shorter cruise fits neatly into a three- or four-day weekend. You get the same onboard fun without using up a full week of vacation days.

River cruising is having its own moment

The survey didn’t stop at ocean cruises, either. Viking topped the list of river cruise brands travelers are considering, with over 62% interest. Celebrity River Cruises and American Cruise Lines followed behind, both gaining serious traction.

What this means for your next booking

If you’ve been eyeing a Mediterranean itinerary, you’re clearly not alone. Popular sailings could book up faster than usual this year. The same goes for those quick three- and four-night Bahamas runs.

Whether you’re Team Alaska or Team Mediterranean, one thing’s clear. Americans are cruising more than ever. They’re booking further ahead to lock in their favorite trips.
